The ASEAN Law Student’s Society, the former body of ALSA, was formed on May 18th 1989 by a group of law students from ASEAN countries. Following the growth of information technology and globalization in the early 2000s, the ASEAN Law Student’s Society realized its needs to to expand the network to other of Asian countries. The breakthrough came on September 7th, 2002, where delegates from Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong agreed with ASEAN Law Student’s Society to merge their organizations. With the signing of the Tokyo Agreement, the Asian Law Students’ Association was officially formed.
